The return of the King and the end of the Empire

Buganda was a centuries old Bantu kingdom. In 1900, Queen Victoria recognized the Kabaka (King) as native ruler of the Protectorate of Uganda, under Her Majesty. In 1939, Sir Edward Frederick Mutesa II. acceded to the throne.
However, with the independence of Uganda in 1962, Buganda lost its privileged position. Mutesa II. was forced into exile in London, where he passed away in 1969. After the successful military coup against president Milton Obote, General Idi Amin Dada arranged in 1971 for the body of Mutesa II. to be repatriated and honored by a state funeral.
The photographs follow the stages of the funeral, starting with the arrival of the coffin, the crowds of welcomers and the lying-in state in the Anglican Cathedral of Namirembe. The Kabaka was put to rest in the royal tombs, among his predecessors. It was the largest event since independence and marked the ultimate end of Empire.
