Marco Polo reported that Kashgar was the "largest and most beautiful of the cities" along the ancient Silk Road. Today, this world has disappeared, as a result of decades of Han Chinese colonization and the oppression of Uyghur culture, religion, and language.
In the early 21st century, the entire old town of Kashgar was demolished, with its unique architecture of adobe houses and its famous open markets, home to hundreds of thousands of Uyghur inhabitants.
The photographs show an early stage in this process, around the central Id Kah mosque. Residents are waiting for their forced resettlement among the rubble of their homes. But the images also bear witness to the resilience of Uyghur cultural and social life, against all odds, despite poverty and oppression.
