Journey in the Labyrinth of Solitude

Octavio Paz wrote about Mexico's machismo, men "never cracking down and accepting defeat with dignity", women "shaped by the imagination and sensuality of the male". He saw in Mexico-City "a monstrous, inflated head crushing a frail body". He admired the extraordinary artistic and intellectual fecundity of Mesoamerica, its love of good taste and crafts.
He spoke about the passion of the solitary Mexican for fiestas that stop the flow of time. The humiliated Jesus on the cross promises salvation, while the Virgin of Guadalupe offers refuge for the disinherited and poor. But Paz considered the Zapatistas the only honest defenders of the village. The photographs are a journey in his "labyrinth of solitude".
